More sun!

I don't know what is with me. I've been very discouraged by the weather. Everyone has! It's been overcast and when it's not not raining, it's raining. I think there have been 3 nice days since May. Seriously.

Tuesday when I woke up it was sunny and warm. I immediately donned a pretty summer dress. Then I worked all day.

Bummer.

Today is gorgeous too and i got off work at 6! Perfect!

Why do I have the urge to clean my stinking apartment rather than go outside and soak up some Vitamin D?

Open Letter

To the guy driving the truck that had a WWJD bumper sticker in front of me on the way home from work today-

What would Jesus do? That's a good question. I think that even non-believers can agree that Jesus was a pretty groovy guy. Most likely he wouldn't cut people off in traffic. That's why I was surprised and dismayed when you zipped in front of me today in a rush to get into the correct lane to get onto the highway.

I understand, traffic is rough. I think that Jesus would, rather than being agitated or in a hurry, just be glad that he's alive. He'd probably be grateful that he could afford an automobile that so conveniently gets him around town. He'd be grateful to be coming home from his job or from visiting friends, or from having money to shop for food and essentials at the grocery store. He might be so grateful, in fact, that he wouldn't mind taking the long way home or having to turn around up the road in order to get in the correct lane. Most likely he'd be well aware that he needs to be in the far right lane and do so well in advance, also alert to the likelihood that others would be getting into the lane, that the lane would be longer and slower than the others, and really not care so much.

I like to think that getting cut off in that last 1/4 mile before the highway is no big deal, just something that happens everyday to almost everyone. I'd like to think that if you really thought about the words and actions of your lord, perhaps you'd take more caution and be less hasty in the future.

...especially since you're wearing your lord's name on your bruised and rusty bumper.

Things you do when you work with children

I've been thinking about my job and the preposterousness of the things I do on a regular basis. For example, I spend more time reading picture books than most single, childless women my age. I find myself dressing in ways I would never dress (Hawaiian shirts, goofy hats, head bobbles) because of my job. I get away with so much, it's unbelievable! I play with people's kids for a living. I make them laugh, I sing with them, I dance with them. But I'm not responsible for them like a teacher or a daycare provider. Mom or dad, grandma or grandpa, someone else is with them so I don't have to worry about feeding them, I don't have to punish them, I just chill out and wait for mom to come take charge. All the fun, none of the responsibility. No wonder I like going to work everyday!

I came across this Haiku I had scratched down that sums it up:

I spend many days
dancing the hokey-pokey
and spinning around.

Do I have to say it?
Yes, I do.

That's what it's all about!

the spenard effect

Last week I wrote about a man who kept me up all night pounding on my neighbor's door.

When I returned from the gym tonight with Luke, there was the same man passed out in front of the building. He didn't look very comfortable. He was twisted and face-first in the pavement. He responded when we asked if he was okay by opening his eyes and nodding his head, meanwhile scraping his face against the gritty, dirty parking lot.

Of course, we called the police immediately. While I contemplated taking this man's picture a family came into the building waking the man again. I noticed that he almost immediately followed them inside and up to the third floor (where I live). Turns out the lady across the hall was in today and they talked standing in the frame of the door.

Luke convinced me to call my resident manager to report to her that my neighbor has shady characters lingering around at all times of the day and night. Having the imagination that he does, Luke suggested that the woman has a meth lab in her apartment. I just think the guy is drunk and probably a relative who is looking for a handout.

Man, my head hurts.

Gloomy summer behind, gloomy summer ahead

Records are being set all over the place here in Anchorage this summer.

Unfortunately, it's record low temperatures and record high rainfall.

This was in today's paper:

Blah.

Then I get a thousand people making the and-they-say-there's-global-warming argument and making jokes about Al Gore. :::eyeroll::: The ice caps aren't going to turn into hotsprings over night, people. Take an ice cube out of the freezer and put it into a glass...leave it out at room temperature for awhile. It's still frickin' cold water. I bet the glass is even cold.

weather

The weather this summer has been truly depressing. Overcast, overcast, overcast...just a little bit of rain. Two months. Seriously.

For the next week, according to weather.com, it's more of the same.

It's summer, but you sure can't tell by the weather.

Tonight in Spenard

Dear guy of ambiguous race who may or may not be drunk and has been pounding on my neighbor's door for the past 3 hours--

Your persistence is to be commended. It is unfortunate for me, however, that it is 4am. I have been a party to your evening since, about three hours ago, another neighbor knocked on my door, woke me out of my peaceful slumber and asked me if I knew you. At that point I knew for sure that I had never seen you before but, in my half-sleeping, could not get a good look at you in order to give the police a decent description.

I was grateful when you left at 2am. I thought, "I might just get some sleep tonight!" Alas, to my dismay you returned knocking and knocking and knocking.

Clearly, whoever you're here to see either doesn't want to see you or isn't here.

The lack of response after such a long period of time should have been a giveaway.

Finally

After a gray and dismal month in June, the clouds broke up and the sun finally appeared. It might even be warm today!

Yesterday we took a brief hike up toward Rabbit Lake. We didn't make it the whole way. I was being a baby and wanted to take a nap.

snow

wait a minute, there's sun that way!
