How come you know so much about chipmunks?

...was a question I was asked on our almost-wilderness hike on Monday.

The answer:
Because in Michigan and in the scientific community, there's a difference between chipmunks and squirrels.

Here is a chipmunk:

Note the tail: It's generally shorter than a squirrel's and less bushy. Also, notice the black and white stripes on it's back.

Here is a squirrel:

Longer arms, longer tail, no stripes, and a taste for blood differentiate squirrels from chipmunks.
They're much less adorable and, the longer you look at the word "squirrel" the weirder it looks.

There is something telling about that.

I love your squirrels. We have two that eat corn from a couple of feeders that I made in my wood shop.

Totally love them both, actually. The chips are charmers; unfortunately because they are seasonal and hibernate, we don't get to enjoy them much year-round. Chips are actually ground squirrels.
Eastern grays (your second photo) are arboreal squirrels - tree squirrels, in other words - and your very excellent photo here is of a juvenile, probably born late summer, and just on the cusp of maturity.
Thanks for delightful photos!

Squirrels are a kajillion times cuter than any chipmunk!

I feed the squirrels outside my apartment all the time. They seem to love almonds. So much fun! And they are cute. And a bit vicious. But so very cute.
